Like Ray, I don't know where to send my thanks for the fire I was spared from so I am writing you. If you know which crews worked on this fire I would appreciate so much any info.
In the early hours of July 5, illegal fireworks were the cause of a 4-alarm blaze which destroyed what was once a bowling alley, then a bingo hall, and which was planned to be a Ukranian church in the future. The building was at 105th and N.E. Halsey. The side of that building sits not more than 100 feet away from my apartment complex. I walked outside that night and the sight that met my eyes was horrific. Huge flames, flying cinders, huge black/red boiling plume rolling up into the sky. I couldn't see where it was coming from due to our buildings, so I walked the short walk to see... the sight that met my eyes was unbelievable. Huge flames engulfed the building. Bone-dry trees sat so very close between it and our apartments. I watched in stunned amazement as 90+ fire fighters and 12-15 firetrucks battled the blaze. Thanks to their heroic efforts, all neighboring businesses and homes (MINE!) were spared.
I have always had deep appreciation and respect for fire fighters, but when something like this happens so close to home it is an experience like no other. I will never be the same and it is a positive thing.

Comments: I don't know where else at the moment to make comments about the
crews who work on fire protection.
This past Friday late in the evening my duplex neighbor came banging on my
door.
They had managed to start a fire by dropping a hot pan of cooking flaming oil
on the floor. He sustained serious
2nd degree burns on the thigh and direct contact with the pan with his hands.
I could see from the front door the large flames licking up the walls at the
opposite side of the structure.
To make a long story short, after I slowed the fire slightly, the fire
trucks came within 5 minutes of the 911
call.
I can't express my gratitude enough for the promptness and also courtesy that
I experienced by the fire reps. Professional, excellent to say the least. Anyone
who has not had a near
tradegy of this kind cannot imagine the panic and then the relief when a fire
crew arrives. All of you, may God or whoever or whatever you believe in
protect you. I know it is a dangerous job and I will understand and read with
more understanding and sympathy when I read of any casualties among your ranks
when on duty.

I read your page on the B52 crash, I do appreciate aviation stories.
I went to the US in 1998 to get some flight training (civil). One of the places
that I went to school was Orlando.
Now I am located at Karup Airport/AFB and their fire trucks are so old and
slow that they need to relocate every time there is an arrival or departure,
cause if they stay at station they will not be within the time limit in the
regulations. There's only 30-some operations daily though.

Wonder if you could help. I am a screenwriter trying to write a few scenes about a helicopter rescue at sea. What I need to know are the names of the crew - ie the person who winches the other person down! I am sure they have proper names but have not been able to find them out.

Comments: A former AF Firefighter myself, I was stationed at McCoy AFB (1970-1971).
My tours of duty have taken me from Chanute AFB, IL to McCoy AFB, FL (1970-1971)
to RAF Alconbury, England (1971-1974) and Keesler AFB, MS (1974-1977). I was
an E-5 57170 when I got out of the fire service and went into training as a
305xx Computer Repairman. Got out of the AF in 1977 and went to work in the
computer industry where I am today. In 1996, I moved to a small island community
in southern Maryland where I have since joined the all volunteer fire department.
I had to recertify as a Firefighter and attended Firefighter school with the
University of Maryland (MFRI). I have since, certified as an EMT-B, and have
served on the board of directors of the Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department
and EMS, Inc. I stay active as a member, however, recently my activities are
mostly administrative in nature.
Your web site is one of the best I have seen. Keep up the good work. I remember
the 'old' guys at McCoy, and have often wondered "Where are they now?".

My memory though is the 'wreckage' after it had been removed from the crash site. It was layed out in the rough shape of a B-52 but you are right the largest pc was the landing gear. The wreckage, as I recall, was buried right on the base behind one fo the housing areas.

the aviation fire journal and thought I'd look around. I work for the Oakland
Fire dept. I've been there just over two years. Prior to this I worked for
the Port of Oakland for 11 years (they used to operate the airport fire department
until a consolidation occurred with the City and Port of Oakland). I'm interested

Comments: It seems that this is my lucky day, finding all sorts of interests.
I was a USAF firefigther-EMT inthe 70's also. Most of my time was spent at
Loring AFB (42nd BW(H), but I did go TDY to Andersen AFB (43rd BW (H)) in '73.
I am now a disabled firefighter, injured in a 1993 house fire. I worked on
my home town fire dept. in Nashua, NH after being out of the AF. When injured,
I was Lieut. of Sta. 2, Saranac, NY VFD, and dept. chaplain. I am now homebound,
and would like to hear from anyone, especially any of the crews that knew me
as "Radar". Any pics you could forward would be much appreciated,
also. Thanks for a great site, which brought me some memories.

My name is Dewayne Gibson, I'm a Air Force Firefighter at Altus AFB, OK. I

your web-site while I was surfing the internet. I have been here at Altus for
one year. I completed Tech
School last year. I found it interesting looking at the pictures of the crash
trucks from your time, and hea-
ring how you went through the basic course in 8 weeks. Today training is done
at Goodfellow AFB, TX
located in San Angelo, TX. The course is 13 1/2 weeks long. After that 13 1/2
weeks airman leave with
certifications as a Firefighter 2, Airport Firefighter, their trained to the
Operations level in HAZMAT, and
though are trained in first aid and CPR.
If you would like to recieve pictures of apparatus the Air Force has in its
invetory or pictures of
Altus AFB, I'll be glad to supply you with them.

around being unproductive, talk turned to previous jobs.
I began to speak of my USAF firefighting experience (1978-1982 / Hahn AB-Germany, Seymour Johnson AFB-North Carolina), and I couldn't adequately describe the scale of the trucks I drove.
My Yahoo! search hit your site, and I was able to 'show-and-tell' to my friends, all about USAF firefighting vehicles.
